You might think Patti Stanger the ‘Millionaire Matchmaker’ is the top Matchmaker (after me naturally…ahem!) but oh no. There is a matchmaker who would make even Patti bow down in praise. Introducing Gong Haiyan, Chinas number one matchmaker.
Whilst Matchmaking is growing in popularity here in the UK, Matchmaking has always been big business in China with Matchmakers being responsible for thousands of marriages. Matchmaking has a 2,000 year history dating back to the Zhou dynasty where each village had a ‘Red Mother’. They were employed by parents to find a suitable partner for their son or daughter.
Gong Haiyan isn’t a Matchmaker in the sense she personally matches her clients. She set up Chinas leading online dating website which has just under a whopping 100 million users. The website Jiayuan.com is so popular someone new is joining every few seconds. Merge all the big online dating websites in the UK and it still doesn’t come close to how big Jiayuan.com is.
